Bouldering at Big Sandy Details
Where Are We Going / How Do I Get There?
We’ll be climbing at a place called “Big Sandy” that is located in the desert to the east of Henderson. We’ll be parking and meeting up at the corner of Ithaca Avenue and North Magic Way (here it is on the map). There is a wide patch of dirt on the south side of Ithaca Avenue where we’ll be parking and standing around with our Barrio Boulders sign. From there it’s a moderate hike (about a mile) along a dirt road out to where the boulders are.
What Should I Bring?
Safety is always first at Barrio Boulders, so make sure you have everything you need to stay alive and happy in the desert in the late springtime. That definitely includes at least one liter of water or your favorite sport drink, probably two. We’ll have some just in case, but plan on bring some. Snacks and/or lunch to keep your energy up are a good idea, and sunscreen is probably a good plan as well.
Wear clothes you can move in, and generally it’s smart to dress in layers. It might be chilly in the morning when we get started, but by the time we finish the sun might be roasting us a bit. We’ll also have a short hike up to the rock, so closed-toe shoes are encouraged.
Finally, climbing gear! If you have your own shoes or crash pads bring them; if you don’t, let us know (BarrioBoulders@gmail.com)! We’ve got you covered.
What Will it Be Like?
We’ll be meeting up at the parking spot in the morning, and there’s a short hike (about a mile) out to the boulders. It’s not a difficult hike, but it is open desert so we’ll take it slow and stay together. Once we get up to the boulders we’ll wander around picking problems that look like fun to climb, and climb them! It’s going to be a great time, we can’t wait to see you there!
