Climbing at Gun Club Details
Where Are We Going / How Do I Get There?
We’ll be climbing at a place called “Gun Club” that is located just behind Cliff Shadows Open Desert Park. If you’re driving, the address is 10769 Hunter Mountain Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89129 and any of the GPS apps should be able to find it (here it is on the map). Eventually it will take you down West Alexander Road, and at the end of the road it will turn left into a parking lot with a set of bathrooms on the right. It’s a little closer to keep going past the paved parking area into the gravel parking, but it’s a difference of about 100 feet so feel free to park by the bathrooms. We will be meeting up there in the gravel parking lot with our Barrio Boulders sign to walk up to the rock together.
What Should I Bring?
Safety is always first at Barrio Boulders, so make sure you have everything you need to stay alive and happy in the desert in the late springtime. That definitely includes at least one liter of water or your favorite sport drink, probably two. We’ll have some just in case, but plan on bring some. Snacks and/or lunch to keep your energy up are a good idea, and sunscreen is probably a good plan as well.
Wear clothes you can move in, and generally it’s smart to dress in layers. It might be chilly in the morning when we get started, but by the time we finish the sun might be roasting us a bit. We’ll also have a short hike up to the rock, so closed-toe shoes are encouraged.
Finally, climbing gear! If you have your own shoes or harness bring them; if you don’t, let us know (BarrioBoulders@gmail.com)! We’ve got you covered. We’ll have ropes and helmets and belay equipment, but if you have your own feel free to bring those as well.
What Will it Be Like?
We’ll be meeting up at the parking lot in the morning, and there’s a short hike (about a quarter mile) up to the crag. It’s not a difficult hike, but it is uphill and parts of the terrain are rocky so we’ll take it slow and stay together. Once we get up to the rock walls we’ll pick out a few routes that seem like a good fit for the group. We’ll set up a rope at the top of the rock for safety, and then we’re climbing rocks until we’re exhausted (or the sun chases us away)! The rocks there are limestone, so they feel really solid in your hands and they’re really grippy for your feet. It’s going to be a great time, we can’t wait to see you there!
